When Your Body Becomes the Language

Can you communicate without saying a single word?

This idea inspired “Creative Movement and Inclusion”, a game created during the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “Sport for All – Breaking Barriers Together” in Hungary.

Developed by young participants from different European countries, the activity explores how movement can become an inclusive tool communication. Designed for all ages and abilities, it focuses on participation and connection rather than competition or physical performance.

How does the game work?

The activity can be organised indoors in a space where participants can move freely. It requires very little equipment: a speaker for music, some post-it notes and the most important tool, the participants’ bodies.

The game is divided into a warm-up and a movement circuit with different challenges.

Emotion Contagion

Participants walk freely around the room and fill the available space. One person receives a post-it note with an emotion written on it and expresses it only through body language. The other participants observe and imitate the movement, allowing the emotion to spread through the group.

This activity helps participants discover the importance of non-verbal communication and creates a comfortable environment where everyone can participate.

The Tree in the Wind

Participants imagine they are trees in the middle of a storm. Their feet stay connected to the ground like roots, while their torso, arms and head move with the imaginary wind.

This exercise helps participants explore body awareness and balance while using their imagination.

The Floor Is Lava

The floor becomes lava and participants must move around while trying to keep as little contact with the ground as possible.

This playful challenge encourages participants to find creative ways to move and adapt to a new situation.

The Heavy Animal

Participants transform into a very heavy animal such as an elephant, a hippo or a T-Rex. They explore how this animal would walk and how its weight would influence its movement.

This activity allows participants to experiment with different postures, rhythms and ways of expressing themselves.

The Snake

Participants become snakes and move close to the floor using slow and continuous movements.

This exercise encourages concentration and helps participants become more aware of their body control.

The Team Challenge

Participants create groups of four and receive a challenge from the facilitator, for example: “Four legs, four ankles and two hands.” The group has to find a solution together so that only the required body parts touch the floor.

This activity highlights the importance of cooperation and communication inside a group.

The Giant Balloon

To finish the activity, participants imagine they are giant balloons filled with air. They extend their bodies and slowly begin to lose air until they become smaller and gently sit on the floor.

This final exercise allows participants to relax and prepare for reflection.

More than a game

“Creative Movement and Inclusion” shows that movement can be a tool for communication and inclusion. The activity can be used in Erasmus+ projects, schools, youth centres and intercultural events, helping participants connect with others beyond language and physical abilities.

As the creators remind us: “Your body is a treasure for communicating with others and with yourself.

This project was funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme.
