Volunteering with the ESC Program
Volunteering is much more than giving your time to help others, it is also an opportunity to learn, grow, and become part of something bigger.
One of the best opportunities for European youth to make a positive impact is through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). Whether you are passionate about education, environmental protection, social inclusion, or cultural exchange, the ESC supports countless organisations to contribute while developing valuable personal and professional skills.
What is the ESC
The European Solidarity Corps is an initiative funded by the European Union that supports young people aged 18-30 who want to participate in solidarity activities across Europe and beyond for up to 12 months.
Its main goal is to strengthen communities while promoting inclusion, diversity, active citizenship, and intercultural understanding. Participants can volunteer individually or in teams, join traineeships or jobs related to solidarity, and take part in projects that address real social challenges.
One of the greatest advantages of the ESC is that it removes many of the financial barriers that often prevent young people from volunteering abroad.
Accommodation, travel expenses, food, insurance, language support, and pocket money are usually covered by the program. This allows participants to focus on learning, contributing, and making meaningful connections rather than worrying about costs.
How can you contribute as a volunteer ?
EU solidarity projects are incredibly diverse.
Volunteers may engage with children and young people by organizing educational workshops, after-school activities, or cultural events. Others support people with disabilities, assist elderly communities, or help refugees integrate into local society.
Environmental projects are also popular, involving activities such as nature conservation, recycling campaigns, sustainable development initiatives, or raising awareness about climate change. Creative volunteers can contribute to communication campaigns, photography, social media, graphic design, or organizing festivals and community events.
Beyond the practical work, the ESC is an unforgettable learning experience. Living in a different country allows participants to discover new cultures, improve foreign language skills, and build friendships with people from all over the world.
Every challenge—from adapting to a new environment to working in an international team—helps develop confidence, resilience, communication skills, and independence.
Many volunteers say that the ESC changes their perspective on life. They become more open-minded, gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, and often discover new career paths or personal passions.
Experience also strengthens skills that employers highly value, including teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, leadership, and project management.
The European Solidarity Corps is much more than a volunteering program. It is an opportunity to contribute to society while investing in your own future. By combining meaningful work with intercultural experiences and personal development, ESC empowers young people to become active citizens who create positive change in their communities and beyond.
If you are looking for an experience that will challenge you, inspire you, and help you grow, the European Solidarity Corps could be the perfect next step. It is a chance to make a real difference—not only in the lives of others but also in your own.
