writing on the sidewalk "passion led us here"

My name is Alberto, and I am a music lover, cinephile, and self-proclaimed fashion enthusiast. Above all, I thrive on finding new challenges and solving them, which defines who I am. I joined LEVEL UP because it represented an exciting challenge and an opportunity to learn new skills while making a meaningful impact. During my time as a volunteer in the European Solidarity Corps program, I embraced a whirlwind of activities, experiences, and personal growth that have left a lasting impression on me.

November/December: Starting my volunteer journey

My first months with LEVEL UP were packed with meaningful experiences. One of the highlights was assisting in the “Polish Your English” initiative, where I helped local children improve their English. I enjoyed working with kids and knowing that my efforts could contribute to their future development.

In addition, I participated in Spanish, Italian, and Ukrainian classes, where I shared insights into Spanish culture by presenting on Christmas traditions. I also supported the association’s online tasks, such as managing the signup process for language lessons.

I fell in love with Polish culture and cuisine, and I explored cities like Krakow and Wroclaw with Vittorio, visiting museums, trying new foods, and soaking up the atmosphere. These first months solidified my excitement for the project and my desire to keep learning and contributing.

January: A month of new connections and challenges

January began on a high note with a visit from my two best friends. I enjoyed showing them around Łódź and discovering more of the city together.

I also started Polish language classes, which I found difficult but fun. The shared struggle with other learners made the classes enjoyable, and I began to notice gradual progress.

My work with “Polish Your English” continued to be rewarding, and I started organizing one-on-one Spanish conversation sessions. At first, it was challenging, but over time, these sessions turned into great opportunities to connect with others and learn more about their cultures and experiences.

One of the most memorable moments this month was attending a training in Warsaw. I met volunteers from different countries and even some fellow Spaniards, which felt comforting and inspiring. I also delivered a presentation at a school—a big challenge for me, as I’m not comfortable speaking in front of large groups. However, I succeeded and felt incredibly proud of myself.

February: New experiences and supporting others

In February, I welcomed José, a new volunteer and one of my closest friends from Spain, to LEVEL UP. I supported him in adjusting to the program and improving his English, which was a fulfilling experience.

I continued working with “Polish Your English,” though I transitioned to a new group at an orphanage. While I missed my original group and Marta’s lessons, working with the children at the orphanage was equally rewarding. Their energy and joy brought a fresh perspective to my volunteering journey.

Polish lessons remained a challenge, but I persisted, focusing on small improvements. I also contributed to workshops and supported other projects wherever needed.

March: Expanding my involvement in volunteer work

March was a month of varied activities. I continued with language lessons, helping with Spanish Café and “Polish Your English.” I also participated in workshops and events, including reading books to residents at a nursing home—a touching experience that taught me a lot about empathy and connection.

Preparation for April’s international s began, giving me a firsthand look at how Erasmus+ initiatives are organized. I took on tasks related to activity planning and logistics, which helped me develop new skills.

April: A bittersweet farewell

April brought exciting challenges, including public speaking training and promotional work for LEVEL UP’s marketing team. I assisted with logistics and materials for the Erasmus project mobility and continued helping with local workshops.

Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, I had to end my project earlier than planned. Leaving Łódź at the end of April was bittersweet, but I felt grateful for the incredible experiences I had during my time in Poland.

Summary: Benefits of volunteering with LEVEL UP

My time in Poland as a volunteer with LEVEL UP was transformative. I learned how to teach languages, manage workshops, and use organizational tools like Trello. I developed practical skills, such as event planning and logistics, while growing personally and professionally.

Living in a new country, adapting to a different culture, and overcoming language barriers were challenges that helped me evolve. I leave this experience with a deep appreciation for Polish culture, the amazing people I met, and the knowledge and skills I gained.
